A CELEBRATION OF TRIBES MAGAZINE #12

Where poetry and art meet in the down and dirty heart of Bohemia!
The "Last Salon", Steve Cannon's performance space and gallery, known as "A Gathering of the Tribes", has published issue 12 of its art and poetry magazine. With over a hundred pages the journal features full color artwork by stars such as Louise Bourgeois and Thomas Nozkowski. The cover art by Willie Birch echoes the original premier issue's cover art by David Hammons.
Cannon, affectionately known as the Blind Professor, started Tribes in his apartment in 1991. Tribes is a survivor and represents a special niche, serving the LES and hosting regular readings, critically acclaimed art shows and workshops.
On Tuesday, August 18 at 7pm, six of the artists and two poets will present work from the magazine at 5C Cultural Center and Cafe. The delightful bohemian venue with its corner windows overlooks the intersection of 5th Street and Avenue C. Artwork will be projected on a screen and the artists will discuss it. Please join us for a low key, informal evening of intimate magic.

E32 is pleased to

forgo any pretense of curatorial trajectory, theoretical imperative or conceptual overview in lieu of just getting a show together for February. Why? Because, the occasional decent day aside, February is a loathsome month and we need some fun. So join us for the artists' TV party that is E32.

MUST I PAINT YOU A PICTURE - presents the work of ten artists, recent graduates of a master's program in illustration. It includes painters, printmakers, comic artists, book illustrators, sculptors, and draftsmen. The influences on their work are as diverse as their techniques. Some have found inspiration in our environment – in the faces, places, and phenomena of New York City. Some draw on cultural heritage, combining it with personal experience to produce new insight. And some use narratives, both invented and borrowed, to create deceptively simple interpretive art. In all cases, the work bridges the diminishing divide between illustration and fine art, relying on fine art traditions for media, theme, or presentation, yet maintaining an emphasis on storytelling and communication. By treating fine art and illustration as complementary, we hope to broaden the scope of both genres, and in doing so ask, "must we paint you a picture?" -- Rachel Burgess

VISUAL VULNERABILITES: deals with the vulnerability inherent in every journey whether that journey is psychological, spiritual and physical.

PAINTINGS AS DISCLOSURE - Kylie Heidenheimer, Allen Hansen, Laura Via and Robert Kingston, all - on their own terms - explore the physicality of paint. While working within a limited format, these artists exemplify personal and diverse vocabularies that are resonant and uniquely theirs.

COLOR, SURFACE & GEOMETRY: Abstraction at it's most basic deals with color, surface and form. But Abstraction risks being merely decorative unless it has some higher content. Often discussions of painterly Abstraction incorporate philosophical or spiritual systems but spirituality is in the inner eye of the beholder. This discussion is less often applied to Geometric art but Geometries, decorative and Sacred, have their roots in pre-history and remain meaningful today.
